Geriatric Physiotherapy

You are never too old to exercise !!!

Geriatrics by definition refers to medical care of older individuals.  This is a branch of medicine concerning the diagnoses, treatment and prevention of diseases in elderly people.

Geriatric Physiotherapy aims to prevent and treat further complications related to aging.  The assessment of older people differs from that in younger people, as it also has to take into account the differences in the body that occurs with age. There are various physiological systems in the body such as skeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory system. Aging reduces the efficiency of the body’s system and the aim of rehabilitation is to maintain optimal function in the affected systems.

Some of factors contributing to muscle dysfunction include deconditioning through inactivity, muscle atrophy, muscle weakness and change in muscle fiber types due to aging process. These impairments contribute to worsening immobility and fatigue. Physiotherapists play a key role in enabling older people to use a number of their body system fully.  Exercise training is recognized as the best available means to prevent and treat limb muscle dysfunction. Exercises are individually prescribed to allow these systems to achieve their maximum capacity.

Diabetes neuropathy is one of the common complications seen in individuals who are diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus. Pathological changes take place in the microvasculature of nerves, causing impaired blood flow to the nerves progressively leading to the structural, functional and clinical changes seen in diabetic neuropathy. Symptoms include motor symptoms, reduced sensation and autonomic loss of function. Lower limb nerves are mostly affected, ultimately leading to loss of balance. This cause of imbalance could be adequately diagnosed and thus a fall which could be injurious to the individual can be prevented.  IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO EXPERIENCES IMBALANCE DO VISIT US, as we could plan a balance training session for you.

Health promotion is also another goal that would help in the prevention of further age-related problems. Physiotherapists can contribute to helping older people to remain comfortable, functional mobile, independent and pain-free.
